Hit 10,000 pounds of cast iron poured this morning and had to sit down for a second
I've been keeping track of my total pour weight since I started at the shop three years ago. This morning I crossed 10,000 pounds with a batch of gray iron for some manhole covers we're doing for the city. It didn't hit me until I wrote it in my notebook during lunch that I've moved more than five tons of metal with my own hands. That number just sounds crazy when you say it out loud. Has anyone else kept a running tally of something like that and been surprised when you added it all up?

Holy crap, five tons! That's insane to think about.

Yeah so actually that number's a bit off. Five tons would be 10,000 pounds which is way more than any normal car weighs. Most midsize sedans are around 3,000 to 4,000 pounds depending on the model. Even a big old SUV or pickup truck tops out around 5,500 to 6,000 pounds fully loaded. So whoever said five tons might have been mixing up tons and pounds or just exaggerating. Still a heavy piece of machinery though.

Yeah, "Holy crap, five tons!" sums it up pretty well. I felt the same way when I first heard that number, it's just a ridiculous amount of weight for something that moves. Really makes you appreciate the engineering that goes into stuff like that.
