A bride's mom in Tampa said my centerpieces looked 'like a sad salad bar' and I had to completely rethink my greenery choices.
I swapped out the limp parsley and kale for eucalyptus and Italian ruscus, and now I always ask for a photo of their dining table before I design anything.

Did she really call kale a sad salad bar?

Actually, the bigger problem is lighting. Greenery that looks fresh and bright in a sunny florist shop can look totally dead under warm, dim wedding reception lights. That kale probably looked fine at 2 PM but like wet garbage by 7 PM under those yellow bulbs. A photo of the table helps, but knowing if the room is bright or moody is what really saves you.

What's wrong with a salad bar look anyway? I always thought that fresh, edible greens had a nice, lively feel to them. Eucalyptus is pretty but it can look a bit stiff and dry to me. Maybe the mom just had a very specific idea in her head. Getting a photo first is smart, though, it saves everyone from a surprise.
