A job in that old Portland bungalow made me rethink my underlayment approach

We were putting down solid hardwood in a house built in 1925, and the subfloor was a mess of dips and humps. The homeowner wanted to save the original fir, so we couldn't just level it with compound. My lead at the time, Frank, showed me how to use a 6mm cork underlayment with a vapor barrier built in. It absorbed the minor imperfections way better than the standard foam I always grabbed. Anyone else have a go-to product for uneven old subfloors?

Honestly, my first attempt at something like that looked worse than the original floor. Cork's a game changer for sure.

Well @sean782, at least you gave the old floor a proper send-off.

But what if your old floor had real character? Cork just looks like a fancy office to me. Umar59 is right about giving the old floor a send-off, maybe it just needed a proper clean and some polish instead of covering it up. My aunt's place had these amazing worn floorboards that told a story, way better than any new uniform cork sheet. Sometimes fixing the original is worth the extra hassle.
