My uncle Ron swore by plastic post sleeves, 5 years later they're all cracked
He told me to use those PVC sleeves on a fence I built for my aunt's place outside Denver, said they'd last forever. Now the sun's made them brittle and half of them are splitting open at the seams. Has anyone else had bad luck with those, or did I just get a cheap batch?

Ngl I actually had good luck with mine up in the mountains for about 8 years now. Think it depends a lot on the brand and how thick the plastic is, the cheap thin ones definitely don't hold up.

Oh man that's rough! I actually read somewhere that the UV inhibitors in those PVC sleeves break down way faster at higher altitudes because the sun is just stronger up there. Denver's a mile high so that probably didn't help your case. I remember this old timer on a homesteading forum saying you gotta paint them with a UV resistant coating if you're above 5000 feet or they'll go brittle in like 3 years tops. Sounds like your uncle meant well but gave outdated advice for your specific location honestly. Cheap batches definitely exist too though, I've seen the thin walled ones crack just sitting in the store lot lol.

See, I'm gonna push back on that altitude theory a bit. I've seen PVC sleeves last a decade up in the mountains without any coating, it's usually poor installation or dirt cheap material that kills them, not the sun strength.
