Vent: My hoof knife snapped clean in half on a tough quarter crack yesterday
It was a Mustad blade I've had for about three years, and it just gave out under pressure. I had to finish the job with my nippers, which was not ideal. Anyone have a brand that holds up better to heavy work?

Man, that's the worst sound in the world, isn't it? Had a cheap blade do the same thing on a nasty bar shoe last fall. The snap made me jump. Ended up using a rasp to finish the bevel, which took forever. You start eyeing those swiss-made knives after something like that happens.

Mustad blades are built like a promise from a used car salesman. Three years is about right for that kind of betrayal. Finishing with nippers sounds like a special kind of torture. My old boss used to say a broken knife is the universe telling you to stop being cheap. You might want to listen to that guy carr.elliot mentioned, the swiss ones don't play those games.

@river320 is right about that used car salesman comparison. Seems like everything these days is made to break right after you get used to it, not just farrier tools. I had a pair of fence pliers snap the same way last year, just gave up mid pull on a stubborn staple.
