TIL from my building's creaky elevator why tiny issues matter
In my experience, I always figured a bit of noise in an elevator was just normal wear. But yesterday, in my local apartment complex, I heard a constant creak from the door every time it opened. When I took a closer look, the guide shoes were almost shot, which was letting things drift. If that had gone on, it could have jammed the door or messed up the leveling. Now I realize that paying attention to those little sounds can save a lot of hassle down the road. Your mileage may vary, but it made me think twice about skipping quick checks.

We had a grinding noise in ours last year. The super found grit in the door track that was wearing down the rollers. A quick clean and lube fixed it, but if left alone it would've killed the motor. Always flag that stuff with building management. Catching it early is just a repair, waiting turns it into a full replace.

My old apartment's garage door motor died from that exact grit issue.

Ugh, that grinding sound is the worst. Glad they caught it in time. Solid reminder to not ignore weird noises.
