Appreciation post: My buddy in Milwaukee told me to always check the fuse before anything else on a dead power supply
I spent an hour tracing a circuit on a gaming PC that wouldn't boot, only to find a blown 5 amp fuse on the board. He saved me from ordering a whole new unit. What's the best 'check the simple thing first' advice you've gotten?

Honestly I've had the opposite experience. I always check the big stuff first because it's usually the problem. I wasted so much time checking fuses on dead boards that just needed a new power supply anyway.

Oh man, that reminds me of the time I spent a whole weekend tracing a weird ground loop hum. I was checking every cable and connection in my whole setup, getting so frustrated. Turns out it was just the cheap power strip I was using for my amp. Swapped it out and the noise was gone. Sometimes the fix is stupid simple but you look right past it.

But is a ground loop hum even that big of a deal? Sounds like a minor annoyance at most.
