Using a voltage tester saved me from a nasty shock while replacing an outlet

I was swapping out an old outlet in my kitchen last weekend. Before I touched anything, I used my voltage tester to check for live wires. It beeped loudly even though I thought the circuit was off. Turns out, there was a backfeed from another circuit. I had to call an electrician to sort it out properly. This experience really showed me why testing is key. Do you use testers every time before working, or do you trust the breaker labels?

Yikes, good call... I'd probably be the guy who trusts the breaker label and ends up with hair like a cartoon character.

Man, a buddy of mine learned that lesson the hard way. He was putting up a ceiling fan and only flipped the one switch he thought controlled it. The tester he borrowed from me was sitting right on his toolbox, but he didn't use it. Got a jolt that knocked him right off the ladder. He's fine, but his pride isn't. It's exactly like @the_simon said, you really can't trust those labels at all. That little beeper is the only thing you should trust.

So why do you think he blew off the tester? Do lots of people just go by the labels? It's such a basic safety step, but it gets skipped all the time.
