The 12 inch rule for outdoor boxes is not a suggestion, people
I keep seeing outdoor receptacles installed flush with the siding, which is a direct code violation. Article 314.29 says you need 12 inches of clear space in front of the box for safe access. I had to fail three houses in a row in the new Maple Grove subdivision for this exact thing. How many of you actually measure that distance before you button everything up?

Read an article last year where an inspector said this is one of the most common fails he sees on new builds. It's not just about the code book, it's about someone actually being able to get a tool in there to work safely. Maybe it's just me but if you're rushing and skipping that check, you're setting up the next guy for a real headache.

Saw a video where a plumber had to cut a hole in a finished ceiling because the valve was buried behind a beam. Totally backs up what you're saying.

Honestly calling it a "direct violation" feels a bit much for a few inches. Most guys get the work done just fine with the box right against the siding, and it looks way cleaner. The code is just being overly picky about a space that nobody actually needs.
