That time my voltage tester failed on a live wire

You only use a multimeter now? What do you do, check that it's working right before you trust it each time? I get why you're spooked after that, but I still use a tester pen for a first look because it's just fast. I just never trust it alone, I always prove it's dead with a second check after. A bad tool will get you no matter what it is if you don't test it on a known live source first.

That's the same reason shortcuts in other areas get people. They're tempting because they're fast, like using a tester pen first. You start to rely on the shortcut instead of the full, safe process. That relaxed habit is what actually gets you.

Learned that lesson the hard way too, now I double-check everything with two tools.
