Serious question, when did everyone decide to stop using a hawk and trowel for taping?

I was on a job in Tacoma where the lead guy was just slapping mud on with a 6-inch knife straight from the pan. Watching him work, I realized my whole setup with the hawk was just adding an extra step for no real gain in speed or finish. Has anyone else completely ditched the hawk, or is that just a regional thing now?

Never used one, always seemed like extra gear to lug.

But what if the extra gear saves your back on a long day. A few ounces now can prevent a lot of pain later, you know? It's about trading weight for wear and tear.

Honestly, that trade-off makes total sense. Seen too many guys wreck their bodies just to save a few pounds in the pack. A little extra weight for way more comfort is a no-brainer for me. Tbh, your future self will thank you for it.
