Client told me my mud work was too smooth - had to change my whole approach
Had a homeowner last month in Ann Arbor who actually complained my finish was too slick. Said the texture on their old walls had character (you know, the wavy hand-troweled look from the 70s). I had to go back and lightly stipple every single joint. Cost me an extra day on a 2,000 sq ft basement job. Anyone else run into clients who want a rougher finish on purpose?

That 'character' comment kills me every time, people actually pay extra for that uneven mess we try to avoid." You can't win with some homeowners, they want the old-school hand troweled look but then complain about every shadow it throws.

Totally feel you on that. It's one of those situations where you just can't please everyone no matter what you do.

@jamesm38 hit the nail right on the head. That hand troweled look is a nightmare to get right, and then people complain about the very shadows they asked for. I've seen homeowners point out a single uneven line and act like the whole job is ruined. It's like they want the charm without any of the character, which doesn't exist. You can't have a perfectly flat wall and a hand done texture, it's one or the other. And the ones who pay extra for that "uneven mess" are the first to call you back about it.
