Overheard a guy at the supply house say he runs his dredge pump dry for 30 seconds to clear blockages

I always shut everything down and dig the suction out by hand when I get jammed up. Has anyone else tried this or is that a quick way to blow out a seal?

Man that "solid way to test if that seal was any good" line cracked me up. I mean yeah its true but man thats a rough way to find out. I had a buddy who used to do the dry run trick on his pump all the time and it worked for him for a while until one day he heard this grinding noise and then saw water squirting out from under the pump housing. He opened it up and the seal was completely shot. He said the rubber was all melted and the ceramic face had chunks missing. So he ended up replacing the whole pump cartridge anyway which cost him more than if he just shut down and dug out the blockage. I just dont see the point in risking it. To me its like using a sledgehammer to open a jar of pickles. Sure it might work but youre probably gonna break something.
