Serious question, does anyone still hand draft first on big projects?

I was at a job site in Austin last year and the lead architect made us do the first pass of a custom stair detail by hand. He said it forces you to think about the connections in a way the computer doesn't. I argued it just added 3 hours to the schedule. What's the better approach for complex details, starting on paper or going straight to CAD?

What exactly did you learn from the hand draft that you wouldn't have caught in CAD?

He spotted a weird load path his software would have smoothed right over.
