Pro tip: stopped using paper templates for cabinet doors after a coworker showed me a transfer punch trick

Used to spend 20 minutes taping and tracing each hinge spot until Bob from the Phoenix shop handed me a $6 transfer punch set last month, now I just line up the hinge and tap it twice, has anyone tried this for face frames?

Man I feel personally attacked right now because I was still using a paper template until about two weeks ago. I had that thing taped, traced, and then I'd STILL miss center by like an eighth of an inch. Bob from Phoenix sounds like a legend because I finally caved and grabbed a punch set after watching a YouTube video and man, it's one of those things where you want to punch your past self in the face for not doing it sooner. Now I just set the hinge, give it a couple love taps with a hammer, and I'm done before I even finished cussing at my old method.

The first time I used a punch set on a cabinet door I literally sat there staring at the hole for a solid minute because I couldn't believe it was actually centered. @drew_bennett24 that paper template struggle is real, I had one that was basically held together with tape and coffee stains from my shop. What nobody tells you is you gotta make sure your hammer hits square, I messed up my first couple by hitting at an angle and the punch just skidded across the wood. Also keep a little scrap block under the door so the punch goes through clean instead of blowing out the back side. Bob from Phoenix is the kind of guy who probably just grunted and handed you the tool and walked away. Once you switch you'll never go back, I swear I've saved hours just on kitchen jobs alone.

Read a blog post that said these punches work great for Euro hinges too.
