Warning: I used to think a 4-foot level was fine for everything until I hung a 10-foot barn door in my garage last spring.
After it was visibly off, a guy at the hardware store told me to always use a laser level for anything over 6 feet, which I now do, so has anyone found a decent laser level under $80?

Totally feel this. I messed up a whole wall of kitchen cabinets using my old 4-footer, the doors all looked crooked. That hardware store guy gave you solid advice. I grabbed a Bosch GLL30 laser level on sale for like $65 last year, and it's been a game changer for anything longer than a stud. The self leveling feature is key, and the line is bright enough for my dim garage.

Alright but what about outside? That Bosch line really stays bright enough in a garage with the door open? My old one washed out completely.

Laser levels are just another gadget to buy and then lose in a drawer. A good old fashioned 8 foot level never needs batteries and you can actually see if something is level by putting it right on the work. That laser line gets fuzzy and hard to see in daylight anyway. Spending that much on a tool for one big project seems like overkill when a longer level does the same job.
