My neighbor said my deck stain job was a waste of time.
I spent a whole weekend staining my cedar deck with a solid color from Behr, and he walked over and said, 'You should've just used a clear sealant, that color will peel in a year.' This happened right in my backyard last Saturday. Do you think solid color stains really fail faster than clear ones?

My cousin in Ohio used a solid stain on his fence. It lasted three years before it started to fade. He said the sun just beats it up no matter what you use.

Watched my neighbor use a solid stain on his fence here in Georgia, and it held up for about four years before it really started to look tired. He power washed the wood first and did two thin coats, which I think helped a lot. It definitely fades, but it didn't peel or crack like some of the clear stuff I've seen.

My uncle used Behr solid stain on his Michigan deck like five years ago and it still looks fine. That neighbor sounds like he just wanted to say something, lol. I've seen clear sealants fail just as fast if you don't prep the wood right. Honestly, if you like the color and did the work, that's all that really matters.
