Four coats sounds like a huge waste of time.

Calling it a waste of time misses the point. A proper finish protects the surface and saves you work later. Doing it right the first time is actually more efficient.

Wait, but what are you even finishing? Like... my deck took three coats last year and it's already peeling. If four coats of the right stuff means I don't have to touch it for five years, I'd do it. Are you using cheap paint or something?
