Tried that toothpaste trick for cloudy headlights and it actually worked after 20 minutes

I saw a video from some guy saying you can clean foggy car headlights with toothpaste and I figured it was total nonsense. But my driver side light was so bad I could barely see at night and I didn't want to spend 40 bucks on a kit. So I grabbed my tube of Colgate and an old rag and rubbed it in circles for maybe 10 minutes per side. The cloudiness cleared up way more than I expected, probably 80 percent better. I'm still shocked that something from my bathroom made that much difference. Has anyone else tried this or found a better cheap trick for headlights?

I read somewhere that bug spray with DEET works even better, but I haven't tried it yet. Might be worth a shot since toothpaste is already doing the job.
