Shoutout to the time my rice cooker exploded all over the kitchen

Last Tuesday I was making teriyaki chicken and rice for dinner. I put the rice in, hit start, and went to chop veggies. About 10 minutes in I heard this loud POP and looked over. The lid had flown off and there was sticky rice on the ceiling, the cabinets, my hair, everything. Turns out I put way too much water in and the steam buildup just blew it open. I ended up scooping what was left in the pot, tossing it, and just made instant mashed potatoes instead. Dinner was weird but edible. Has anyone else had a kitchen gadget just totally fail on them mid-cook?

Wait, are you sure it wasn't just a bad batch of rice? I've been cooking rice for over 20 years and never had anything blow up on me, even with too much water. I've seen people pour in way too much water and the worst that happens is it boils over a bit, not launches the lid across the room. Maybe the pressure valve on your cooker was already messed up, or you didn't lock the lid on right. That's not the machine's fault if it's user error. Have you checked to see if the lid seal was worn out or something?

Honestly, not every pressure cooker has a fancy locking lid with a seal. Some of the cheap ones just have a lid that sits on top with a gasket. Had an old Presto do the same thing to my aunt. User error is possible but these things can definitely fail on their own.

Hit reply before I even finished reading lmao. Yeah its crazy how people just assume everything is always user error. I swear half the stuff in my life broke exactly like that, not even old or cheap stuff sometimes. My mom had a rice cooker from Target that just stopped sealing right after a few months, nothing wrong with the way she used it. People forget that factories sometimes just spit out duds and no amount of perfect technique fixes a bad gasket. Its like saying your phone screen cracked because you looked at it wrong lol, nah sometimes it just happens.
