The hostel owner who swore by noise canceling apps, I laughed, then I cried

Back in March I was doing a 3 month stint in Chiang Mai and this hostel owner kept insisting I download a white noise app for my room. I thought it was silly because my airbnb was on a quiet side street, not near any bars or markets. Last week I got a place in Lisbon for 40 euros a night and the walls were paper thin, my neighbor snored like a chainsaw every single night. After 4 sleepless days I finally caved and tried the app, slept like a baby the first night. Now I tell every nomad I meet to pack a good sleep app before they book anything. Anyone else have that one piece of advice they ignored for way too long?
