Bought a $40 cloud storage plan, then deleted 3,000 old emails to avoid using it

Last month I paid $40 for a year of extra cloud storage because my phone kept yelling at me about space. Turns out, the real issue was 3,000 junk emails with attachments from like 2015 clogging everything. I spent two evenings unsubscribing and bulk-deleting, and now I barely use half my free storage. Why do we pay for more space when we could just clean out what's already there? Has anyone else thrown money at a problem that a solid delete session could fix for free?

Laughing at myself because I literally did the same thing last year... paid for extra iCloud space and then realized it was my photo stream full of 400 blurry pictures of my cat that were the real problem. Spent one whole night deleting duplicates and old screenshots instead, and now I'm just sitting here with all this paid space I don't need. My future self is probably gonna read this post and still buy the plan again, because apparently I can't learn from my own mistakes. It's like my brain sees "storage full" and immediately reaches for my wallet instead of my delete button.
