Noticed everyone uploading vertical crops of wide paintings lately
I was scrolling through the showcase thread on Tuesday and saw like 12 pieces in a row where the artist cropped a wide horizontal landscape into a 9:16 vertical shot. It kills the whole composition, especially the pieces with real depth, and I keep seeing it in the weekly critique threads too. Is it just an Instagram mindset thing, or are people actually preferring the taller format for phone screens now?

Ugh, tell me about it! I literally did this once with a sunset shot and cropped out the entire horizon line, it looked like a weird orange stripe on a phone screen. 😅 Guess I was trying to make it more "scrollable" but honestly it just shows how lazy we get with composition when we're stuck in the vertical mindset. Yeah, I blame the phone screen defaults too, but some of those wide pieces are begging to be seen in full. Maybe we all need to just post the OG version and trust people to rotate their device.
