PSA: I lost $3,400 on a 'guaranteed' parking lot lease near Eastern Market
I paid a guy $3,400 upfront for a six month sublease on a gravel lot off Riopelle, thinking I could flip it to a food truck for the summer. Turns out the actual owner had no idea the guy existed, and the lot is zoned for storage only, so the city shut it down in 3 weeks. I got one call from the guy, he said 'that's on you for not checking the deed,' and his number stopped working that same day. If you're doing anything near Eastern Market, pull the parcel record yourself before you hand over a dime. Anyone know a title company in Detroit that won't charge me $600 just to confirm who owns a lot?

$3,400 on a handshake from a guy who doesn't own the lot. That deed check takes ten minutes at the register of deeds, way cheaper than this lesson.
