I watched my neighbor pay full price for a new lawn mower at the big box store last weekend

He didn't even check the local hardware store's summer clearance, which had the same model for $150 less. People think the big stores always have the best price, but that's just not true anymore. Do you have a local spot that consistently beats the chains on big stuff?

Yeah the local hardware store thing is so true. I needed a new grill last month and almost went to the big store. Checked the family owned place by me on a whim. Same brand, last year's model, but it was like two hundred bucks cheaper. Felt good to keep the money in town too. Those places will often throw in free delivery or a bag of charcoal just to get your business.

Ever notice how the local guys will actually fix stuff for you? My old push mower from the local shop, the carburetor clogged last spring. Took it back, the owner cleaned it for free while I waited. Try getting that at a big box. Eva468 is right about them throwing stuff in too, mine came with a free can of fuel stabilizer. They just want you to come back.
