My neighbor Linda mentioned she's been writing down one good thing each night for a year now.
We were talking over the fence and she said she started after her mom passed, just to get through the day. She told me 'some days it's just that the coffee was hot, but you still write it down.' It made me start doing it too this week, and already it feels different than just thinking it. Anyone else keep a list like that?

Oh totally! I have a little notebook by my bed for that exact thing. Last night my good thing was that my cat finally used the new scratching post (after ignoring it for weeks). Writing it down does make it stick more, like you're saving it for later.

It's like building a little proof against the day's bad stuff (which is pretty smart).

My cousin tried that gratitude journal thing for a solid six months and said it just made her focus more on what was missing. If the only good thing you can find is your cat using a post, maybe that's a sign the day was actually pretty rough. I see what @the_emma is saying about building proof, but doesn't that just create a list of tiny things you have to dig for. Sometimes a bad day is just a bad day, and pretending it wasn't feels like lying to yourself.
