My dog learned to open the fridge door today, I had to change the handle
I came home from work and found my golden retriever laying on the kitchen floor surrounded by a whole pack of hot dogs, a block of cheddar cheese, and a torn up bag of lunch meat. It took me a few minutes to figure out how she got in there since the fridge door was closed. Then I watched her hook her paw under the handle and pull it right open like it was nothing. I don't know how long she's been doing this but I'm guessing it's been a while based on how smooth the motion was. I went to the hardware store in town and got a round pull knob instead of the bar handle she was using. So far she just sits and stares at the fridge now which is kind of sad but also way better than coming home to a crime scene again. Has anyone else had a dog figure out a handle like this or am I just dealing with a genius?

Oh wow, your dog is definitely a genius and I'm not just saying that because I manage a hardware store and love seeing people solve problems with new handles! My beagle mix figured out the same kind of bar handle on our pantry door and helped himself to a whole bag of tortilla chips and a jar of peanut butter. I had to switch to a round knob too and now he just gives me this pitiful look every time he walks past it like I'm the one being unreasonable.

Used to think dogs just kind of gave up after a couple tries at stuff like this... but watching a golden retriever casually hook a fridge handle changed my whole view. @susan130 you get it, that pitiful look is almost worse than the mess sometimes. Mine did the same thing with the cheese block, shredded the wrapper all over the living room rug.
