My cat tried to adopt a squirrel at the park today
I took my orange tabby Leo for a walk on his harness at Riverside Park this morning. He spent a solid 20 minutes sitting under an oak tree, making these little chirping sounds at a squirrel that was just chattering back at him from a branch. It was like they were having a whole conversation! Has anyone else's pet ever tried to make friends with a wild animal?

Watched my cat have a full on staring contest with a crow on the fence last week. They were both so still I thought they'd reached some kind of weird animal treaty. My cat finally blinked and the crow just flew off, probably to tell its friends about the weirdo on the ground. Leo and that squirrel were definitely negotiating something, maybe a nut exchange program. My attempts at making friends are never that smooth.

Hah, that sounds about right! My neighbor's dog had a whole standoff with a raccoon under their porch last summer, just like @cameronn62's story. They would just stare at each other for hours, not moving a muscle. It was like they were waiting for the other one to make the first move. I swear they had some kind of silent animal argument going on. The raccoon finally just waddled off like it had better things to do.
