Unpopular opinion: dad jokes are better when you butcher the punchline on purpose

So I was at my kid's soccer game last Saturday and this other dad told a joke about a horse walking into a bar. He messed up the ending and said "why the long face" at the wrong time. Everyone groaned but honestly it was way funnier than if he got it right. My wife thinks I'm crazy but I've been botching punchlines all week on purpose. What do you guys think? Is the mistake part of the joke or am I just bad at telling jokes?

You used to think that getting the punchline right was the whole point of a joke. But honestly, you convinced me with that soccer game story. A few weeks back my nephew tried telling a knock-knock joke, forgot the setup, and just started laughing at himself. That was way better than any correct version I could remember. Sometimes the stumble makes it feel more human and less rehearsed.

My buddy Mark tried telling a pun about a steak at a cookout last summer. He got halfway through and completely blanked on the whole second half of the joke. He just stood there holding a spatula and went "uhhh... cow goes moo?" and we all cracked up way harder than if he'd nailed it. It turned into this running gag for the rest of the night where everyone kept trying to finish the joke for him.
