The groan that made me rethink my whole punchline setup
Last week I delivered a classic 'why did the scarecrow win an award' at the family cookout and my teenage nephew just stared and said 'that's not even a joke, it's just a fact.' Now I'm torn between sticking with the pure puns or adding a twist ending to get the laugh, which side wins in this group?

That teenager hit the nail on the head, though. Pure puns are basically dad jokes on autopilot these days, and kids can smell a setup from a mile away. Twist endings are the only thing that keeps them on their feet, honestly. But don't throw the pun out completely, just hide it behind the surprise. That way you get the groan AND the actual laugh, which is the real win.
