My uncle swore by the banana peel shine trick, so I tried it on my boots
He told me at Thanksgiving that rubbing the inside of a banana peel on leather makes it look new, and I laughed it off in front of him. Three weeks later I gave it a shot on a pair of scuffed work boots and they actually came up shinier than with the polish I bought for $12. Anyone else got a weird family hack that turned out to work, or did my uncle just get lucky?

The trick works because banana peels have potassium in them. That's what feeds the leather, same stuff in expensive conditioners. Your uncle probably learned that from his dad or something, people forgot this kind of thing over the years. Next time try wiping it off with a dry cloth after you rub it in. Stops it from getting that sticky residue if you use too much peel.
One thing nobody mentions though, it doesn't last. You get a quick shine but it fades in a couple days. Polish actually soaks in deeper and holds up longer. So your uncle's hack is good for a quick fix, but keep that $12 bottle for the real work.
