Had an IT guy call me out on a fake charging cable

I was at a coffee shop in Austin last week and this guy next to me saw me plug in my phone. He pointed out the cable had a little chip on the end that looked off. He said 'that's a juice jacking cable, someone's grabbing your data while you charge.' I didn't even know that was a thing. Has anyone else run into fake chargers that mess with your phone?

Buddy of mine found one at a hotel charging station in El Paso.

Shut up, that's creepy as hell. I'm gonna start looking at my cables weird now.

Best way to avoid it is use a charge-only cable, they don't have data pins wired up. You can find them cheap on Amazon or make your own if you're handy. Also, portable power banks cut out the risk completely since it's just battery to battery.
