Pro tip: a guy at a Columbus creator meetup roasted my thumbnail game and he was right
I went to a small creator meetup in Columbus back in June, like 30 people in a rented room above a coffee shop, and I almost skipped it because I figured it would be a bunch of people talking about follower counts. During the open feedback part, this older guy who makes woodworking videos pulled up my channel on the projector without asking and said flat out, "your thumbnails look like screenshots, not covers." I was a little annoyed at first, but then he showed me his own before and after, and the difference was wild. My click rate was sitting around 3 percent and I never once thought about the text size on a phone screen. He said something that stuck with me, that people scroll on a tiny screen and if they can't read your words at arm's length, you already lost them. So I spent one Saturday redoing 12 old thumbnails with one big word, a face, and way less clutter. Next upload did 4 times the views of my normal stuff, which is not a huge number but it was enough to convince me. Has anyone else had a stranger give them blunt feedback that actually helped, or do most people just nod and move on?
