Was against paying for writing software until I tried Scrivener for a NaNoWriMo project
I spent $59 on Scrivener back in November after failing to finish a novel outline in Google Docs for the third time. The corkboard feature alone saved me about 10 hours of reorganizing scenes. Has anyone else found a tool that clicked after you swore you'd never spend money on it?

Oh man, the "swore you'd never spend money on it" part hit me hard. I was exactly the same way with Scrivener, thought it was overpriced for organizing words until I cracked and bought it during NaNoWriMo too. For me it was the split screen view that did it, being able to see my outline on one side and write on the other just clicked in a way that free tools never did. I'd tried WriteRoom and even some random plain text editors but nothing let me keep my research notes and character sketches right there without a million tabs open. After about three days with Scrivener I realized I was spending way less time fighting the software and way more time actually writing, which is what I was paying for all along. Now I recommend it to everyone but I always tell them to try the free trial first because it's a weird learning curve that doesn't work for everybody.
