Prompt with a 30 minute timer made me write 1,800 words, plain timer gave me 200
Last Friday I tried a 30 minute timed prompt where I had to kill a character by the end, and I got 1,800 words out. The day before I tried the same prompt with no clock and only got 200 words before I started reorganizing my desk. Is the deadline doing the work, or am I just fooling myself?
The "kill a character by the end" part might be doing more than the clock. That's a clear finish line, not just a time limit, so your brain knows exactly what it's aiming at. What happens if you set the same 30 minutes but drop the death requirement, does the word count hold up or fall off?
