My writing group told me to use 3 random words as prompts, and handing someone else the reins broke my 8 month dry spell
For 8 months I sat at my desk in Portland staring at a blank doc trying to pick the perfect prompt myself, then last week I let my buddy pull 3 random words out of a hat (grapefruit, ladder, toll booth) and I had 900 words down in 40 minutes, so I'm curious whether anyone else writes better when the prompt comes from outside their own head or if that's just me dodging the hard part.

The random words just gave you a way out of the real problem, which was you agonizing over picking the perfect prompt. I'd bet money you could've written 900 words on grapefruit alone if you'd stopped trying to find the right thing to write about.
