Two customers fighting over the last rotisserie chicken taught me to stay out of it

I work the deli at a grocery store in Boise and yesterday two guys started arguing over the warm chicken bin. One guy said he saw it first, the other guy said he was reaching for it. My manager stepped in and gave them a free cold chicken each to settle it. I took a step back after that, because in my experience resolving a customer fight never ends well for the employee who jumps in. Anyone else have a moment where you just let the customers sort it out themselves?

Did you see that study about how stepping into a stranger's argument just makes everyone madder at you? It said people get more aggressive when a third party gets involved, which is why that manager giving them free chicken was the smartest move. Honestly, letting two grown adults fight over poultry is way better than getting yelled at yourself.
