Why I think the SMS signal rule is overrated, based on what I saw at a job in Tacoma
Everyone on here says you need a dedicated signal person with radios for every blind lift, and I used to agree. Then I watched a crew in Tacoma run a 60 ton pick with a guy standing at the corner who just used hand signals and a whistle, no radio at all. He knew the load, he knew the swing radius, and the operator said he could read him better than any voice in his ear. I get that OSHA wants what it wants, but I think we lean on radios as a crutch and stop learning to read the load and the ground guy. The best operators I know can feel a lift going wrong before anyone says a word. Curious what you all think, does voice in the ear actually make you safer, or does it just make you lazy?
