Old timer at the rail yard told me to ditch the load chart

Guy with 40 years on a friction crane watched me check the chart for the third time on a 12-ton pick and said 'son, the chart tells you what it can do, not what you should do.' I still use the chart, but I get what he meant about site conditions and feel after that chat in Oakland.

Damn right! Charts give you the math but 40 years in the dirt gives you the real answer. That old timer was basically saying the chart is a starting point, not the whole story once the ground shifts under your feet.
