That one client who cried over a $35 haircut, then tipped me $60
Last March I had this older lady come in, clearly nervous, and she told me she hadn't touched her hair in 8 months since her husband passed. She just wanted it shaped up, nothing fancy. I took my time, talked her through the wash and cut, and when I spun her around to see the back, she just started crying. She said she finally felt like herself again, not just a widow. Then she handed me a $60 tip on a $35 service and hugged me. Have any of you had a client get that emotional during a simple service? How do you handle that without getting choked up yourself?

...and people think we just cut hair, but honestly half the job is listening. I've had a few like that over the years, and the trick is to keep your hands busy while they talk and let them lead. You don't have to say much, just nod and let them cry if they need to. It's okay to feel it yourself, just don't let it mess with your steady hand. That tip was her way of saying thank you for seeing her, not just her hair, and you earned every cent of it.
