Appreciation post: the 2 minute foil test that saved me from 6 bad root touch ups
I used to wing my developer volume on gray coverage because the client swears she only needs 10 and I believed her for 6 visits straight. Two months ago a rep at the supply house in Columbus showed me a foil swatch test, mix a dime size of your formula, paint it on a foil strip, and hit it with the dryer for 2 minutes instead of waiting 35 on the head. Turns out I was underprocessing her roots by a full level the entire time and blaming the water. Now I do it on any new color client before I commit, and my reformulation rate on gray coverage dropped to almost nothing. Also saved me from a level 9 lift gone orange on a walk in last Saturday. If you have a color line that shifts batch to batch, try the foil swatch before you mix the bowl, what is your go to check?
