A client at my salon in Phoenix told me to stop asking about her vacation, and it stung but she was right
I had a regular come in last Thursday for her 6 week color touch up and I did my usual small talk, asked how her trip to Sedona went. She just said 'can we do quiet appointments from now on' and I felt weird about it the rest of the day. Later I realized she books the last slot on purpose and always seems worn out when she walks in. Now I keep a little card at my station that says quiet, chat, or music and clients just point at what they want. Anyone else switched to something like this, and did some clients read it as you being cold?
That card idea seems kinda cold to me honestly. Half the reason people keep coming back to the same stylist is the chat, the "how's your mom doing" stuff. If I walked in and had to point at a card just to say hi, I'd feel like a number, not a person.
Sounds like this one client just needed some quiet, and that's fine. But making it a whole system for everybody feels like solving a problem you don't have yet.
