Pro tip: found out the average concrete truck waits 17 minutes at the gate before anyone waves it in
I was reading a report from a dispatcher out in Phoenix last week and he said his crew tracks gate wait times on every pour. Turns out 17 minutes is the average across their 40 jobs a month, which adds up to almost 11 hours of a truck just sitting there per month. He said the fix was stupid simple, one guy with a radio at the gate instead of making drivers call the office. We started doing that on our site in Tucson and cut our wait time down to about 4 minutes. Has anyone else measured this on their jobs or is it just a Phoenix thing?
Tracked something like this years back on a tilt-up job in Mesa, except we were watching the pump truck instead of the concrete trucks. Same kind of thing. The pump sat idle for like 20 minutes every morning waiting on the first mixer to get waved in, and nobody could figure out why the schedule kept slipping. Turned out the gate guy was also the same guy doing safety checks, so he'd be halfway through a harness inspection when a truck pulled up. We never got a clean number like your 17 minutes though, so props to that Phoenix dispatcher for actually keeping the log. We just sat around guessing and blaming each other until the super got fed up and stood at the gate himself for a week. Funny how the answer is almost always just having one person whose only job is that. Anyway, your 4 minute number sounds about right once you take the phone tag out of it.
