My old super in Memphis said 'just stack it, we'll sort it later' and I ran with that for 2 years
Back in 2021 I was running material for a mid rise job off Poplar Ave in Memphis and the super there had a habit I picked up without thinking. Every delivery, he'd wave it toward the laydown yard and say 'just stack it, we'll sort it later.' I did that for close to 2 years across three different sites, and my laydown areas looked like a junk drawer. It finally hit me on a Friday when a crew spent 3 hours digging for 40 feet of 4 inch PVC that was buried under a pallet of rebar, and the foreman looked at me and asked why we don't sort on the way in. That question rattled around my head all weekend. So here's the debate I keep having with myself, is quick stacking on delivery the right move because the truck driver is standing there waiting and you're paying for his time either way, or is sorting at the gate worth the extra 20 minutes per load because you pay for it ten times over later? I've seen both work. One super on a job in Little Rock had us stage by trade zone and his guys never touched a shovel, but he also had a bigger yard which most sites don't get. Where do you all land on this, sort on delivery or dump and chase?
