A buddy pointed out my go-to 'government cover-up' line was getting lazy

We were talking about that whole 'birds aren't real' thing as a joke, and I kept saying 'classic government cover-up' to every point. He finally stopped me and said, 'Man, you're just slapping that label on everything... it's like you're not even trying to pick apart the actual story.' It hit me hard because he was right. I was using it as a catch-all to sound smart without doing the work. Now, before I post a theory, I force myself to find at least one specific hole in the official story, like a date that doesn't add up or a witness account that changes. It makes the debate way better. Anyone else get called out for a bad habit in how they argue this stuff?

Had a friend tell me my "follow the money" line was getting old. Now I try to name one specific person or company that would actually profit. It forces me to do the homework.

Yeah that's a solid move, @benclark. Makes the point way stronger when you can actually point to someone.

Saw my buddy do the same thing with "they just want to divide us." He was ranting about some news story and his wife cut him off, asking exactly who "they" were and how this specific thing was meant to divide people. He had nothing. It was a total crutch, just like @daniel470 said about naming names. He started actually looking at who funds the groups pushing the stories he hates.
