Patching my driveway left me with a wavy mess, need advice

Last month, I tried to fix a cracked part of my driveway with bag mix concrete. I mean, it looked simple in videos, but the finish was really tough. I used a steel trowel too soon, and it dragged up the rocks, making it rough. Maybe it's just me, but the mix felt too wet or something. Idk, now there are waves and dips that hold water after rain. I think I should have waited longer or used a different tool first. What do you all do for small concrete fixes like this? Any tricks to get a smooth finish without special gear?

Riley's spot on about the wait, but it's not just about the thumb test. If the mix is too wet, you'll always get that drag no matter when you trowel. A magnesium float is ideal, but if you don't have one, a wood float or even a flat board can work to level it out before it sets hard. You gotta do multiple passes, starting with a light touch to bring up the cream, then wait a bit more before the steel trowel for the smooth finish. Those waves happen when you're troweling unevenly or too early, so focus on keeping the tool flat and using long, steady strokes. It takes practice, but once you get the feel for when it's ready, it gets way easier.

That initial wait before troweling is key, I learned to let it set until your thumb leaves only a light mark. A magnesium float first really helps pull up cream without dragging aggregate like steel does. You can test if it's ready by just pressing the edge lightly.

Wait, you used a steel trowel first? No wonder it's a mess, @the_oscar is totally right about starting with wood or magnesium.
