Can we talk about the expansion joints on the new Walmart lot in Austin?

I drove by that new Walmart out by 45th street last week... those expansion joints are spaced way too close together, maybe every 4 feet. Whoever poured that slab must have been in a hurry or just didn't care about the finish. It's gonna crack like crazy within a year. Anyone else notice how bad some of these big box store jobs are turning out?

I mean is it really that big of a deal though. I park on those slabs all the time and haven't seen any cracks yet. My buddy works for a crew that pours parking lots around town and he says the spacing is fine as long as the base is compacted right. People get too worked up over every little thing with concrete these days. Give it a couple years before you call it a disaster.

Honestly I hear you cora863, and I get what you're saying about not seeing problems yet. But tbh I've seen too many parking lots that looked fine for a year or two then turned into a mess of cracks and potholes. Your buddy might be right about the base being compacted, but with joints that close together on the north end like someone mentioned, that concrete has no room to move. Ngl it's not about being worked up over nothing, it's about watching the same mistakes get made over and over again. I just hate seeing people waste money on something that could've been done right the first time.

Did you see how they spaced those joints barely 3 feet apart on the north end near the garden center? That's gonna be nothing but spider cracks by summer. The concrete mix looked too wet when they poured it too, saw that from the road.
