Thermal paste comparison on a client's gaming rig opened my eyes

I swapped a client's stock thermal paste for a higher-end compound on their 3-year-old Ryzen build and the temp drop was way bigger than I expected. They were hitting 92C under load in CPU-intensive tasks, and after cleaning off the old crusty stuff and applying a quality paste (about $12 for a tube that'll last me dozens of jobs), it dropped to 78C. I always figured paste was paste, you know, but the difference in quality and spread consistency was night and day after a few stress tests. The old stuff was basically caked on and dry, probably causing hot spots. Now I'm kicking myself for not recommending upgrades to other clients with older builds. Has anyone else noticed a huge variance between budget and premium thermal pastes in their shop?

Oh man, its crazy how much of a difference it makes when its fresh, right? I swear half the time people just leave that factory paste on for years and it turns into basically concrete. That drop from 92 to 78 is a game changer for CPU lifespan alone.

Yeah that dry crusty stuff is basically insulating your CPU, not cooling it.
