Showerthought: I called those $12 thermal pads a gimmick until one saved a customer's XPS 15 from a $400 motherboard swap
Back around 2019 I was doing a lot of Dell XPS 15 9550 repairs and kept hearing folks online swear by re-padding the VRM area with aftermarket thermal pads, which sounded like snake oil to me. Then a regular customer's machine started throttling hard after 20 minutes of Premiere exports, and temps on the VRM were hitting 100C, so I finally pulled the pads and did the swap with 1.5mm Fujipoly. Clock speeds held steady through a full hour render and the thing is still running today at his shop in Toledo. What got you all to finally try a fix you thought was nonsense, and did it actually hold up long term or was it placebo?
