Am I the only one who actually LOVES a packed train car?

Last Thursday on the 7:15 into the city, it was so full I couldn't move my arms, but the shared, quiet focus of 200 people just trying to get to work felt weirdly peaceful and productive. Has anyone else had a commute that was objectively bad but subjectively great?

It's that weird group focus, right? Like a silent agreement to just exist for a bit. Chen.adam has a point about the backpacks, but once you're all locked in place, you can just zone out. I had a bus once where we all watched a guy try to eat a breakfast sandwich without elbowing anyone. It was a shared, quiet mission.

A friend told me about a train ride where everyone was watching a kid try to keep a balloon from hitting the ceiling. It was that same quiet group focus, like @chen.adam said about avoiding eye contact but in reverse. For a few stops, we were all just rooting for that balloon.

Ngl, you might be the first person to ever find peace in a human sardine can. The only shared focus I get is everyone trying not to make eye contact. My idea of a productive commute is one where I don't get someone's backpack in my face. You've found the secret zen of public transit that the rest of us are missing.
